“I am a major airline captain and I fly the Boeings 757 and 767 around the world weekly. The minute I get to my room, I get my Dell 700M going, and Skype is always on.
I have this tiny ear piece-mic contraption, similar to what you use with a cell phone, and it is always plugged in, just in case someone calls or I need to make a call.
When I’m on a layover, I have all the time in the world to catch up with my friends and family. That’s the perfect time to make the calls I never have time to make.
While traveling throughout Asia, the Middle East, Australia, or Europe, I use SkypeIn to forward my cell to my Dell, and I use SkypeOut to check my cell’s messages, to make or cancel appointments, or to check on anything that needs to be checked upon.
I Skype my Dad regularly, as he’s retired and spends his entire day on his computer watching movies and talking to his friends who are scattered around the world. Many of the pilots I know use Skype the same way I do.
If you walk through the hotel in Osaka, you will see a dozen of us on the couches in the hotel’s lobby, where the Wi-Fi is free. All of us sit there for hours with our earpieces and mics, talking, laughing, whispering.
Just last night I installed it on a pilot’s computer and showed a room-full of pilots how to use it.... I even taught them the phrase: ‘Skype Me’!
They can never believe how great Skype is until they try it for themselves. ‘Sounds like you’re right next door’, they always say!”
